The wood gets a yellow tinge or reddish brown color when iron oxides are present in the silica solution ; the wood is green or blue in color if copper, cobalt or chromium is present in the silica solution. If the color of the petrified wood is pink then it has manganese in silica solution and the black color is caused by the presence of carbon in the silica solution.
